SECRETARY JOHANNS MAKES APPOINTMENTS TO THE NATIONAL SHEEP INDUSTRY IMPROVEMENT CENTER Washington, DC, January 6, 2006 - Secretary Mike Johanns announced the appointment of Paul Lewis of Oregon, Chase Hibbard of Montana and Tim Turner of Texas to serve as members of the National Sheep Industry Improvement Center (NSIIC) Board of Directors. The NSIIC is managed by this Board of Directors that is appointed by, and reports to the Secretary of Agriculture. The Board of Directors consists of 7 voting members chosen from the sheep and goat industries and the respective Under Secretaries for Rural Development and Research, Education and Economics who serve as non-voting members. Mr. Lewis and Mr. Hibbard will continue to serve in two positions reserved for those with expertise in finance and management. Mr. Turner is a new member of the Board and will serve as in one of the “active producer of sheep and goat positions” that is currently held by Glen Fisher of Sonora, Texas. Mr. Fisher was eligible for re-appointment but chose not to have his name put forward as a nominee in 2006. # # # # 2006 Sheep and Goat Grants 7/26/2005 The National Sheep Industry Improvement Center, (nsiic.org), has announced the availability of $300,000 in competitive grants for the sheep and goat industry in the July 26 Federal Register. This is the fifth year of the Sheep and Goat Grant Initiative. The projects funded will seek to address a verity of diverse issues that affect the sheep or goat industries at the local, regional, national or international level. Jay Wilson, Executive Director/CEO said “This is an important program for the sheep and goat industries and I hope to see a variety of innovative proposals from all segments of the industry.” He further stated that “the required format is easier to follow than it has been in years past and hopes to see proposals of all size, from small to large.” The full text of the Federal Register notice, forms and a summary of projects that have been funded in the past can be found at www.nsiic.org.
